Network75: Specialist Water Training
One of the benefits of being part of a large network is that you are constantly meeting very interesting people, with great ideas. One such person was Ashley Clough who worked for Laing O Rourke in Wales. He was passionate about the safety of his workers and he identified that there was a potential lethal scenario being played out daily.
There had been a series of potentially lethal incidents throughout Wales associated with high pressure air within water pipes. . We were asked to think of innovative ways in which we could develop practical and safe apparatus that demonstrates to the workers the dangers of high pressure when working with water pipe networks..
The training takes just a half a day and consists of a lecture, a pub-type quiz, and practical demonstrations. The practical sessions are the exciting elements of the training, because we have developed an air powered rocket, which can be launched up to 300m air using air pressure. The apparatus has been constructed from conventional water mains pipe.
The other piece of apparatus is affectionately known as the ‘Melon Surprise’. Inspired by the 1970s classic film The Day of the Jackal which includes a scene where Edward Fox is testing the sites of his rifle by firing at a watermelon. It demonstrates what damage can be inflicted with pressures as low as 3 bar. A video of the demo’s are available below.
