Network75: Overseas Work Placements
Over the past five years we have found placements for hundreds of students. They come from countries such as France, Spain, Finland and Germany but we are always looking to explore new areas.
It's been a hugely successful programme with students benefiting from being embedded into a totally different culture, and companies benefiting from having a highly motivated foreign student in their workplace. The students are mainly undergraduates and will be studying in the following areas: mechanical engineering, electrical/electronics engineering, civil engineering, built environment and IT.
The success of the scheme can be attributed to the effort we make in matching the right student with the appropriate company. We interview the students at their host university so that we can ensure that they have the correct level of English, and that we can understand what type of work placement they are expecting. The next stage is to locate the appropriate organisation, which would be able to provide suitable mentoring, and therefore a worthwhile experience for the student. We also provide intensive English language tuition, whereby the students can improve their TOEIC score. Typically, this consists of an intensive five-week English language course at the University. The students will then undertake their work experience, which can vary but is usually about nine weeks duration. After the work experience, they then undertake the final one weeks intensive English programme, and on the last day there is a TOEIC test.
There is no doubt that it is a very hard, intensive programme of study and work but the results can sometimes be spectacular.
